Chinese team creates ‘emotional’ robot
A team of researchers in China have showcased their new humanoid robot, capable of portraying a wide range of emotions. Footage filmed at the University of Science and Technology of China shows the robot, named ‘Guagua,’ singing and telling stories, while displaying different faces.
Guagua has 30 motors driving the ‘muscles’ in its face, enabling it to portray human-like expressions. It is designed to provide interaction and engagement with users and to provide personalized feedback and support to meet the user’s emotional needs.

Mariachi band vs fire-eating juggler street fight turns hellish
Two competing buskers: a mariachi band and a fire-eating juggler came to unusual blows after an argument on the street. At first it seemed to be comparatively tame, with one of the band chasing the juggler to a small taco restaurant, El Infierno. Soon, the mariachi had backup, in the form of his band, all armed with the mariachi’s most dangerous weapon: Spanish guitars.
However, the juggler had balls, and a talent for shooting fire straight out of his mouth. The resulting inferno saw the fire-eater regurgitate flaming hell upon the now flaming Hell, setting several guitars ablaze, the guitarists, but most of all, himself. It’s unclear who won this most baffling of turf wars, but police did take the fire-eater to the hospital with undisclosed injuries.

‘Missing link’ blind fish discovered
Scientists in China poking about in underground caves and rivers have made a brand new discovery: a new, very pink, very weird type of cavefish. However, what they did not discover were its eyes, because it doesn’t have any. The ‘Guiyang Golden-line Barbel’ was found in an underground stream of the Wujiang River System in 2019, but it took five more years of study to understand its significance – it seems to be an evolutionary middle step between sightless cavefish and sighted non-cave fish.
Unlike other cave fish, it doesn’t have the large whiskers (barbels) that sightless fish normally have, nor the long fins or thick scales. While it doesn’t have eyes, it almost does, with a faint black spot under the skin where its eyes would be. Some of the fish even have very rudimentary vision, able to differentiate between light and dark. It’s a missing link, showing how such features evolved. Also, despite having only been discovered, its been determined that these fish are in danger of extinction: they’ve evolved (or half-evolved) to only survive in that particular cave system.

Woman scares bear away by throwing stones
Somewhere near the Russian village of Orotukan, there is a hungry bear who’s unexpectedly skipped dinner. The potential dinner, in this case, was Olga Prokopenko, out on a walk minding her own business.
The bear didn’t expect its prey to fight back, but that's just what Olga did. She explained to reporters that she didn't even have time to be afraid when confronted by the bear, and began throwing stones at it, ‘like driving away stray dogs.’ Amazingly, this worked, and the bear decided ‘Screw this, I’m going home.’ After the bear had run away, Olga continued her walk as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.

China unveils its robotic ‘dogs of war’ in Cambodia
The Chinese machine gun wielding robodogs have taken the center stage during the largest-ever military drills between China and Cambodia.
The 15-day ‘Golden Dragon’ military exercise kicked off on May 16th and involves over 2,000 troops, 14 warships, two helicopters, 69 armored vehicles and tanks as well as China’s latest military addition – ‘dogs of war’.
Although handlers have kept them on the leash and demonstrated only their walking capabilities, these four-legged, remote-controlled drone soldiers with automatic rifles mounted on their backs are designed for a much broader use such as precision shooting, reconnaissance, surveillance, and remote engagement.
In his opening speech, Cambodian armed forces commander-in-chief Vong Pisen said that the robotic war dogs would ‘enhance the capabilities’ of the two armies in the fight against terrorism.

A displaced Palestinian living in Khan Younis has built himself a tent using discarded Israeli missile parts. Abu Taysir Miqdad’s home was destroyed, and he and his family moved first to Rafah, then to Khan Younis. He found some nearby land and set to work, scavenging metal poles, missile parts and other discarded equipment, and built a shelter.
Abu describes building his makeshift home as having ‘created something out of the enemy’s remains,’ even building an oven from missile fragments, and says that during construction he didn’t think of anything except to ‘keep working constantly.’
